Getting listed in Wikipedia is still important

March 21st, 2007 · 2 Comments · SEO

Recently Wikipedia added the nofollow tag to outgoing links. This was designed to prevent spam by discouraging people from placing too much importance on their site being featured in Wikipedia.

Some webmasters now think that there is no longer any point in being listed in Wikipedia, but they are wrong!

Here are my three golden reasons to why you need to be on Wikipedia:

wikipedia ranking

* Highly Targeted Traffic. I have had some of my sites featured on Wikipedia, this usually gives me 10-20 highly targetted visitors per day.

* Google Ranking. When someone does a keyword search, there is a good chance they will click your link if it is featured as a Wikipedia reference for that topic.

* Credibility and Branding. If you are listed on Wikipedia you may be seen as an authority site for that topic. This is mainly because Wikipedia doesn’t make a profit, and therefore people believe it is completely neutral.

* Want .edu links? I have seen examples where site owners have managed to get numerous .edu links due to being featured in Wikipedia. You would be amazed how many students use Wikipedia as their sole source of info.

    Thanks Andy.

I know that many teachers encourage their students not to rely on Wikipedia, but who listens to their teachers? ;-)
    Thanks for the comment.
