My New SEO Trick for 2008

September 17th, 2007 · No Comments · SEO

I have been working on an SEO trick that I hope will increase click throughs for my SEO results.

We all want to get the number 1 spot in Google for our search terms, but only one site can claim that golden spot. So this leaves 9 other people cursing, wishing and plotting…

It is generally considered that the 1st place result should get around 40% of all clicks for that search, whilst 3rd place gets around 10%.

But what if we could be in 3rd, 4th, or even 5th position, and increase our click through rate?

What if we could go from 10% to 20% click throughs? That would be just as good as ranking one place higher, and it would be a whole lot easier than building hundreds of backlinks.

So how can we do this?

I like to call this SEO trick “The Sidestep”.

What you do is use a title for your content that is related to the search term you want to rank for… BUT it has a different slant on it.

For example: did you know that thousands of people every week search for the term “how to kill myself” in Google?

Amazingly there is a lot of info in those results that shows you the best ways to commit suicide.

What if we created an article where we provided support and options for someone who may be suicidal? We could use a title like “Read This Before You Kill Yourself”, which has enough of the keywords in it to rank, then build the links with the link text “how to kill myself”.

If you were to get into the top 5 then your article would stand out from the others in Google and you would get a higher % of click throughs than normal.

This can be done in many ways… for example, if you are doing a review of a SEO tool, then use a headline like “The Shocking Truth About xxxx SEO tool”, thus ensuring you increase your click through rate.

This is already being done by many PPC experts, but there is no reason it won’t work in SEO as well.
