Welcome to part three of my SEO for dummies guide.
Today I am going to discuss the importance of page titles.
Not many webmasters realise just how important a good page title can be for your rankings. The page title is one of the most important factors that the search engines use to rank your web page, so look around the web and almost every SEO expert will tell you to choose a page title with your keywords in it.
This is good advice, but it is also slightly outdated. In todays world of social media it is important to have a page title that attracts attention. So let’s do some examples:
Presuming we have made an article about “MP3 websites”. Most webmasters would simply give the title “MP3 Websites”, but this can be improved.
Most SEO experts would choose something like this: “MP3 websites | MP3 web site guide” (Notice how I use the singular and plural as well as using the term “guide”)
This page title is a good one for the search engines, and most SEO experts would be very happy with this page title, but in the world of web 2.0 you are better going for a more dramatic page title, something that is going to grab the readers attention.
Here are some examples:
“The secret MP3 website guide” or “MP3 websites you ought to know”
These titles will attract more attention, but also note that I have kept the main keyword “MP3 websites” in both titles.
So they key to a page title is keep your main keyword whilst making the title dramatic and attractice to readers.
